Password Change Requirements

All WIU passwords (STARS, WIUP, Zimbra, Western Online, etc.) are required to be regularly changed at least every 90-120 days. For more information you may login with your ECom userid and password at Password Change.

ECom Accounts

ECom accounts allow login access to:

  • Zimbra (email)
  • Campus computers
  • WesternOnline
  • Network storage space
  • Hosting space for a personal website

You must continue to change your password at least once every 120 days, with your login providing warning when this deadline approaches.

As indicated in the bookmarks distributed around campus, to change your ECom password:

  • Go to Guava at https://www.wiu.edu/guava
  • Enter your current user name and password information
  • Select the option to change your password
  • Your new password must be at least 8 characters long and must contain one or more numbers and one or more alphabetic letters, upper and/or lower case
  • You can not reuse any of your last 10 passwords

Note: If you use a mobile device (iPod Touch, Windows Mobile, Blackberry using IMAP, etc.), a 3rd-party e-mail client (Outlook, Eudora, MacMail, etc.), or other systems that use ECom accounts (i.e., Dreamweaver), you must update your password on these devices and programs after changing your password in Guava.

If you forget your password, your account will be locked after 6 invalid login attempts. Should this happen, you will need to contact the uTech Support Center (309-298-2704) to have access reestablished.

STARS Accounts

STARS is the student access to their financial accounts, their course schedule and registration, their grades, etc.

You must continue to change your password at least once every 120 days, with your login providing warning when this deadline approaches.

As indicated in the bookmarks distributed around campus, to change your STARS password:

  • Log in to STARS with your existing PIN at http://www.wiu.edu/stars or from WebTools
  • In the STARS Password change window, enter your current PIN and then enter a new PIN
  • Your new PIN must be exactly 8 characters and contain one or more numbers and one or more alphabetic letters
  • You can not reuse any of your last 10 passwords

If you forget your password, your account will be locked after 5 invalid login attempts. Should this happen, you may unlock your own account by answering previously established user-defined questions. Otherwise, you will need to call STARS (309-298-STAR) or bring a picture ID to the Student and Parent Assistance Center in the University Union, the Office of the Registrar in Sherman Hall, the uTech Support Center in 126 Stipes Hall, or the WIU-Quad Cities campus to have access reestablished.

MVS/WIUP Account

MVS/WIUP, which is accessible via the WIUP web system as well as the 3270 "black screen" clients, must have passwords changed every 90 days.  When your password expires, you will be prompted to change it upon login into the system.

If you forget your password, your account will be locked after 3 invalid login attempts. Should this happen, you will need to contact the uTech Support Center (309-298-2704) to have access reestablished.
