Recognized Fraternity & Sorority Life Governing Councils at Western Illinois University

At WIU, we have 4 governing councils that provide governance, accountability, educational opportunities, social programming, and structure for our chapters: the Interfraternity Council (IFC), the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC), the National Pan-Hellenic Council, and the Panhellenic Council (PHC).

Interfraternity Council (IFC)

The Interfraternity Council’s purpose is to advance fraternity on campus and provide interfraternal leadership to the entire community. Members of the council consist of 5 executive board members and 2 voting delegates from each of the 9 fraternities. The council provides programming, camaraderie, and information to the members of IFC through a variety of opportunities.

Multicultural Greek Council (MGC)

The primary purpose of the MGC is to unite and empower its member organizations through advocacy, and organizational development while fostering positive professional and social relationships and collaborating on issues impacting the Multicultural Greek community. Members of the council consist of 6 executive board members and 2 delegates from each of the 7 fraternities and sororities. The council works to promote an appreciation of the diversity of cultural and ethnic backgrounds that exist on the Western Illinois University campus.

National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)

The NPHC is the coordinating body for the "Divine Nine" historically African-American fraternities and sororities at WIU. Originally formed in 1930 at Howard University, the purpose of NPHC is "unanimity of thought and action as far as possible in the conduct of Greek-letter collegiate fraternities and sororities, and to consider problems of mutual interest to its member organizations." NPHC plans and implements a variety of programs for its chapters as well as the entire community. Members of the council consist of 8 executive board members and 1 delegate from each of the 6 active fraternities and sororities.

Panhellenic Council (PHC)

The Panhellenic Council is the governing body over the five National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) sororities located on our campus. It is the responsibility of the Council to unite all 5 chapters in the spirit of community, to enforce the NPC guidelines, and to oversee and regulate the recruitment process. The Council works year-round to promote positive ideals of sorority life at WIU and contribute to the WIU community through involvement, leadership, academic, philanthropic projects, school spirit, and overall support. Members of the council consist of 7 executive board members and 2 delegates from each of the 5 sororities.
