Lois and Lowell Lueck Collection

What it is

Upon his retirement as Director of Institutional Research and Planning, Dr. Lowell Lueck established the Lois and Lowell Lueck Reading Fund in memory of Ardeth and Leonard Grove. The purpose of the collection is to promote new ideas and methods for the improvement and teaching of reading in the Western Illinois University region through the funding of reading materials that can be used in workshops, in-service training and other activities that encourage all citizens, especially the disadvantaged, to improve their reading skills and the desire to read.

Where it is

The Lueck Collection is housed as a separate non-circulating collection, organized according to genre, in the Children's Literature Examination Center in Horrabin 80 for two calendar years. After the two years, this collection is transferred to the Curriculum Library in Horrabin Hall.

How it operates

Books are purchased with Lueck funds on the basis of recommendations from the elementary education faculty and Curriculum Library. Selection is based on established criteria for excellence in writing and illustration. Upon arrival, each book is processed and marked with a special book plate. The collection is available to area educators seeking materials to aid literacy instruction.
