MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois UniversityÂ’s Creative WriterÂ’s Society (CWS) Club honored the winners of its annual contest recognizing literacy achievement in relation to WesternÂ’s campus theme on Oct. 27.

Senior Board of Trustees (BOT) major Greg Pickett (Country Club Hills, IL) won the poetry prize with his work “Deluge,” while Kathleen Clauson, a library technical assistant in Western’s physical sciences library, won the narrative prize for her fiction “Songbird.”

“Among issues identified for the writers to focus on were community participation, cooperation, promotion of multiculturalism, advocating on behalf of others, as well as addressing historical, political, cultural and social issues that bring about greater public awareness,” said Adbul-Rasheed Na’Allah, chair of Western’s African American Studies department and a CWS adviser and journal editor.

Provost and Academic Vice-President Joseph Rallo presented the awards. Western English Professor David Stevenson chaired the judges panel.

Pickett and Clauson each received a $100 cash award and their work will appear in a special issue of the CWS journal, “The Flavor of Ink.”
