Just Hired: Elizabeth Gelling

Just Hired! Through the experiences of local, regional, national and international students, Western Illinois University has some incredible alumni who are changing the world in the workforce. This series will feature students from all over the world who are hired post-graduation.

MACOMB, IL - - Meet Elizabeth Gelling, a soon-to-be graduate of Clinical Laboratory Science, who recently accepted a position with OSF St. Francis Medical Center as a microbiologist.

"OSF is driven by its mission to provide the best patient care," Gelling said. "I took the 3 + 1 route for my major which allowed me to be enrolled at the OSF School of Clinical Laboratory Science for my senior year. This program includes attending lectures and being in clinical rotations for the school year.

It is essentially a year-long interview for a position within the laboratory. Nearing the end of the school year, student positions were posted and I applied to the departments I was most passionate about. The interview process was fairly simple and focused on my values and attitude in the workplace. I am excited to begin a career in microbiology with a hospital system that truly cares about its patients!"

When asked how her degree prepared her for the workforce, Gelling responded with her involvement with her sorority Delta Zeta.

"At WIU I learned a lot of valuable skills such as communication, time management and the ability to be accepting of all to reach a common goal," Gelling said. "I was a part of the Delta Zeta Sorority which truly built my leadership skills for my future. My major is a direct position in healthcare and WIU gave me the ability to focus on areas I was most passionate about."

"I plan to be a part of the WIU Alumni Association and potentially reach out to professors with important information about the clinical laboratory science field to help current students be successful," Gelling concluded.
