MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University's Department of Mathematics will sponsor a summer program for girls ages 11-13. The program, "Girls Plus Math," will take place July 17-22.

The program promotes interest in mathematics, a willingness to take risks in analysis and the self-confidence and motivation to persist in problem solving. Participants will explore critical thinking skills, web page creation and computer software, along with mathematical concepts and equations. Some of the hands-on components include building a tetrahedral kite, origami and various games that foster critical thinking skills.

The WIU Department of Mathematics will coordinate the instructional portion of the program. In addition, a number of professionals will visit the program to describe how they use math in their career and how they became interested in what they do.
