MACOMB, IL – Carrie Keeney, a collection specialist in Western Illinois University's Billing and Receivables Office, has been named the February Civil Service Employee of the Month.

Keeney's nominators said she has the "values, assertiveness and dedication" to receive the monthly honor.

"She is certainly knowledgeable of not only her department, but processes University-wide," according to her nominators. "She is positive, patient and encouraging with students. She works well in a team and always looks for opportunities to improve efficiency and streamline processes for student convenience."

With a "special place in her heart for our veterans," Keeney comes to work early, misses lunches or stays late to help students. She is responsible for certifying the student benefits for the University's veterans.

"Her dedication to the students and the positive relationship with Veterans Resource Center has undoubtedly improved these sometimes difficult processes for our veterans," her nominators said.

Keeney also has the "daunting" task of collecting delinquent debt on the University's behalf.

"Students and families are not always happy when they are contacting her, but she has a gift for listening and responding in a professional manner," according to her nominators. "This gift can transform a potentially negative call into a positive encounter with the University."

Keeney began working at WIU in August 1992 as a cashier II in the cashier's office. In June 1996 she was named a financial aid adviser II in the cashier's office and on Feb. 5, 2004, she was named to her current position.

Western faculty, staff and administrators, as well as community members, wishing to nominate a civil service employee for this monthly recognition should contact Civil Service Employees Council (CSEC) Public Relations Representative Wendi Mattson at WK-Mattson@wiu.edu.
