Dear University Community,

At Western Illinois University, we are proud to join in the celebration recognizing the achievements that women have made over the course of history. Women's History Month (WHM), which recognizes women's contributions to history, culture, science, education, and society, has been celebrated in the U.S. each year during the month of March since 1987. Like many institutions of higher education, Western has long celebrated the many, yet often unheeded, contributions of women during this month-long observance.

The WIU Women's Center, the Multicultural Center, and other University departments have several events and programs scheduled to commemorate WHM, as well as International Women's Day on March 8. This year's WHM theme is "Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories." More information about the 2023 celebration can be found at bit.ly/41xH6Vg.

It is an honor to be part of a University that celebrates the accomplishments and contributions of women, both past and present. As I noted last month in my message regarding Black History Month, the recognition and awareness should not stop when these month-long celebrations conclude. We always have time to learn more and to promote equality and equity for all.

The Women's Center, along with the Feminist Action Alliance, Campus Girl Scouts, the Western Organization for Women and more, supports a welcoming and gender-inclusive campus community and promotes opportunities to celebrate women, collaborate in programming and outreach, and seek unity and understanding to raise awareness for women's issues.

Thank you to our female faculty, staff, and students for their contributions to WIU's success. Pakistani female education activist and the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai said, "When the whole world is silent, even one voice becomes powerful."

As we reflect on the achievements of women at Western Illinois University and across the world, let us recommit to supporting a world, and a University, of equity, equality and justice.

Sincerely,

Guiyou Huang
President
Western Illinois University
