WIU Celebrates Minority Health Month in April

MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University has been observing Minority Health Month in April with the national theme "Give Your Community a Boost."
To kick off the month, Macomb Mayor Michael Inman issued a proclamation April 4 at the Macomb City Council meeting. In attendance from WIU were Associate Provost and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs Russ Morgan; Chair of the Minority Health Month Planning Committee Lorette Oden; Director of Environment Health, McDonough County Health Department and member of the WIU Minority Health Month Planning Committee Chris Adams and NAACP local chapter President and member of the WIU Minority Health Month Planning Committee Byron Oden-Shabazz.
Minority Health Month is recognized annually during the month of April. The WIU Minority Health Month Planning Committee consists of individuals from WIU, as well as the Macomb community.
"We thank President Guiyou Huang, WIU, and the Macomb community for their continued support in recognizing the month of April as Minority Health Month," said Oden.
According to the National Office of Minority Health, the initiative grew into a month-long program to advance health equity across the country, on behalf of all racial and ethnic minorities.
Activities still to come include:
Monday-Friday, April 25-29 - Walking for Health - All are encouraged to take a 10-20 minute walk during their lunch hour or enjoy a walk with a group at Hanson Field at noon.

Wednesday, April 27, 3 p.m., Horrabin Hall, room 1 - Major Health Concerns of WIU Students

Thursday, April 28, 12:30 p.m., Horrabin Hall, room 21 - Living Well McDonough County: A Community Approach to Adult Obesity Prevention and Management
