Dear Western Illinois University Community,

Today, I ask you to join me in reaffirming our University's commitment to social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. We must speak out and act against the anti-Black sentiments and actions, the injustices, discrimination, racism, and hate that plague our friends, neighbors, co-workers, colleagues, family members, and citizens around the globe.

The video that captured Mr. George Floyd's last breath is beyond horrifying. While one officer was arrested and charged, others were present and should be held accountable for their actions, or rather, lack of action. From Mr. Floyd in Minneapolis to Ahmaud Arbery of Brunswick, Georgia to Breonna Taylor of Louisville, Kentucky to many, many more, what happens in our nation, no matter where, affects our University. Our Black students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends are hurting, angry, and afraid. We hear you. We see you. We know you are not okay, and we grieve with our communities. We stand beside you and will speak out against injustice.

We are dedicated to ensuring our University is a safe haven for all members of our community and our guests. We will uphold our University's commitment to providing an environment that values diversity and emphasizes the dignity and worth of every individual.

We cannot be bystanders. As I mentioned last fall in my call to action for members of our University and host communities, each of us has the ability to be an agent of change, to set the right tone and direction, to educate individuals and raise awareness, and to speak out to right the wrongs. Each one of us plays a fundamental role in ensuring a climate that is safe, respectful, and supportive for all students, faculty, staff and guests.

We have resources in place if you need to speak with someone. Counselors from the University Counseling Center and staff from the Multicultural Center stand ready to help. Please take care of yourselves, and know that Western is here for you. Please be safe.

Take care,
Martin Abraham
Interim President
