MACOMB, IL – Bloomington, IL, artists Erin Furimsky and Sarah Smelser will have their exhibition, "A Brief Rhythm," on display through Feb. 6 at the Western Illinois University Art Gallery.

A reception for the artists will be held from 4:30-6 p.m. Feb. 6 at the gallery. The artists will speak about their work at 5 p.m.

The exhibition is made up of Furimsky's ceramic sculpture and Smelser's monoprints.

"I use carefully chosen fragments as layers accumulate organically across the surface of the piece," said Furimsky. "I consider myself an explorer, seeking new ways of layering color, pattern and marks. Multiple repetitive marks represent the ticking of time, as I methodically create dots, dashes, and swirls."

"My latest work uses memory, impression and my experiences as a traveler to cobble together an invented, non-traditional landscape," said Smelser. "I divide and organize space, as a farmer or a quilter might, to explore pattern, as well as experiment with density, dynamism and emptiness."

The exhibit is open free to the public. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. and Saturday 1-4 p.m. The gallery is closed on University holidays.
