MACOMB, IL – A celebration of the International Day of Peace will be held at Western Illinois University from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday Sept. 19.

The International Day of Peace ("Peace Day") is observed around the world each year in September. Established in 1981, by a unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day provides a globally shared date to commit to peace above all differences and to contribute to building a culture of peace.

"Every year, the WIU community comes together in September to celebrate the International Day of Peace. This year, we encourage everyone to come out and chalk their favorite message of peace on the sidewalks. We will have a table at the University Union on Thursday, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., where participants can pick up chalk," said WIU Political Science Professor Julia Albarracin.

The Peace Day celebration is sponsored by the WIU Department of Political Science, the WIU College of Arts and Sciences and the Peace Corps programs at WIU.
