MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University alumna Melody Betts began performing on Broadway this week as part of the cast of "Waitress."

Betts is part of the show's ensemble, but also plays the Nurse Norma and is an understudy for the Becky character. Performances of the Broadway musical are scheduled through August. The show is about a waitress who is trying to dream her way out of a small town and a rocky marriage by crafting desserts that mirror her life situation.

Most recently, Betts, who received her MFA in theatre from WIU in 2009, performed in the live television production of "Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert," starring John Legend. She has an impressive theatre resume, as well as television appearances on "The Chicago Code" and "Chicago PD." She is also a member of the Actor's Equity Association, SAG-AFTRA and BMI.

Betts returned to the WIU campus in 2015 and spoke to theatre and dance students about her theatrical experiences. She answered questions about preparing to graduate and to enter a career path similar to hers.
