WIU Hosts CSI Summer Youth Camp
June 20, 2018
MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University is taking its core values of educational opportunity and personal growth out into the community with Summer Youth Enrichment Camps for grade school, junior high school and high school students. Sponsored by the WIU Office of Study Abroad and Outreach, a variety of youth camps will be held this summer, including CSI: Crime Scene Investigations, for grades 10 and up, Sunday-Thursday, June 24-28, presented by faculty from WIU's School of Law Enforcement and Justice Administration (LEJA).
The CSI program is an interactive, hands-on experience presented by a former FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) agent, as well as Illinois State Police and professional crime scene and criminal justice professionals.
Students will have the opportunity to participate in several mock criminal investigations, including the trial of a street robbery/homicide case. They will collect evidence, compare ballistic and fingerprint specimens, analyze blood splatter, draw crime scene sketches, create tire or foot castings, prepare crime scene sketches, perform "black" florescent light investigations and write basic reports. Students will also learn about the use of informants and how undercover operations are handled, as well as the craft of interviewing and interrogating witnesses and suspects. As the case develops, the students will learn about the different roles by acting as witnesses, jury members and prosecution and defense attorneys, and they will decide the fate of the suspected perpetrator.
Throughout the week there will be demonstrations from K-9 officers, crime scene technicians, gang and drug specialists and several detectives.
The Summer Youth Enrichment camps are for youth in grades 4-12 and will span the entire months of June and July; they are either commuter or residential programs.
Other programs include: Exploring Harry Potter (Grades 5-7), June 25-28; Discovering the World Through Science (Grades 9-12), July 8-13; Girls Plus Math (Ages 11-13), July 15-20; Art: Colorful Minds & Creative Hands (Grades 4-6), July 22-27; TechVenturing: Design, Create and Sell (Grades 7-12), July 23-26.
