WIU General Counsel Interviews Set (Update)

MACOMB, IL -- Three candidates will interview for the position of general counsel/University attorney at Western Illinois University April 23-24, April 26-27 and May 1-2.

Candidates and interview dates include J.D. Lux, assistant general counsel and assistant secretary, Board of Trustees, Ivy Tech Community College, Monday-Tuesday, April 23-24; Laura McLaughlin, former general counsel and vice president of strategic performance, Logan University (dba Logan College of Chiropractic) in St. Louis, MO, Thursday-Friday, April 26-27; and Timothy Stratton, an equity partner with Gust Rosenfeld PLC, Phoenix, AZ, Tuesday-Wednesday, May 1-2.

An open session will be held with each candidate on the Macomb and Quad Cities campuses. The WIU-QC open session with Lux will be held from 2-3 p.m. Monday, April 23 in Riverfront Hall 213, while the Macomb campus open session will be held from 11 a.m.-noon Tuesday, April 24 in the University Union Capitol Rooms. The Macomb campus open session with McLaughlin will be held from 11 a.m.-noon Thursday, April 26 in the Union Capitol Rooms and at the WIU-QC campus from 10-11 a.m. Friday, April 27 (location TBA). The Macomb campus open session with Stratton will be held from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 1 in the Union Capitol Room, while the WIU-QC open session will be held from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 2 in Riverfront Hall 218.

Lux has been the assistant general counsel and assistant secretary, Board of Trustees at Ivy Tech Community College since April 2010. Previously, he served as the executive director of governmental relations at Ivy Tech from 2009 to 2010. He has also worked as the caucus campaign director (July-November 2008) and chief counsel (January-June 2008) for the Indiana House Democratic Caucus; as an attorney-at-law with Lux & Lux in Shelbyville, IN (2003-2008); deputy director and general counsel for the Indiana Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Agency (2000-2002); and deputy attorney general and legislative liaison for the Indiana General Assembly (1997-2000).

He earned his juris doctorate from Ohio Northern University Pettit College of Law and his bachelor's degree from Franklin College.

McLaughlin served as general counsel and vice president of strategic performance at Logan University from 2008-2016. Previously, she served as the senior associate at Armstrong Teasdale, LLP in St. Louis from 2002-2008. McLaughlin has also worked as manager of human resources and HR compliance leader at GE Capital Mortgage Services (1997-2000); human resources manager at Multiplex Company (1996-1997); vice president of human resource development at the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority (1990-1996); and a research associate at the Washington University School of Medicine (1981-1990).

She earned her juris doctorate from the Saint Louis University School of Law, a master's degree from Washington University and a bachelor's degree from Saint Louis University.

Stratton has served as an equity partner with Gust Rosenfeld PLC since July 2010. Previously, he was senior counsel at Ice Miller LLP in Chicago from 2007-2010. Stratton has also worked as vice president of Hutchinson, Shockey, Early & Co. in Chicago (2006-2007); an associate with Chapman and Cutler, Chicago (2002-2006); an associate with Zukowski, Rogers, Floor & McArdle, Crystal Lake (2001-2002); and a law clerk with Franz & Kerrick, Crystal Lake (1999-2001).

He earned his juris doctorate from the Western Michigan University Cooley Law School and a bachelor's degree from Ball State University.

The University attorney serves as the University's Freedom of Information Act Officer and Ethics Officer, and also represents the University in all legal matters involving external administrative agencies. The attorney advises the executive administration and Board of Trustees regarding legal matters and compliance; advises and assists departments responsible for compliance and employment matters; and drafts and reviews all contracts concerning the University on a wide range of issues, including employment, real estate and leases, construction, insurance and procurement.
