College Courses Offered to Area High School Students
April 23, 2018
MACOMB, IL -- High school seniors from west-central Illinois can get a jump-start on their college career during the 2018-19 academic year through Western Illinois University's Special Admission High School Program.
According to WIU Admissions Counselor Katy Gorsuch, high school juniors from McDonough, Fulton, Hancock, Adams, Henderson, Brown, Case, Warren, Knox, Schuyler and Pike counties can apply for admission at WIU and take classes at Western during their senior year of high school. For the 2018-2019 school year, the University will offer an automatic scholarship to high school dual enrollment students, which will cover two-thirds of tuition costs.
Qualified students who choose to continue their education at Western following their high school graduation are eligible for automatic scholarships through the Western Commitment scholarship program. In addition, WIU's Cost Guarantee program, which freezes tuition, fees, room and meal plan for four years, is available to all new freshman, transfer and graduate students, explained Admissions Director Seth Miner.
"Students who take advantage of this program during their senior year of high school, and then continue their college career at Western after graduation, will have their tuition, fees, room and meal plan rate locked in at the current rate. They will not see an increase in any of their costs associated with their education at WIU," Miner explained.
WIU Admissions will host an application/registration program on May 31, June 1, and June 4 from 1-6 p.m. for students to learn more about the program, with the option to complete an admission application (fee-waived) and register for classes. Students will work with their WIU academic adviser to select the courses that best fit their schedule and needs.
"This is the perfect opportunity, as well as a most affordable opportunity, for our local high school students to receive college credit and get a jump on their college career," Miner added. "Western provides numerous online course options, as well as on-campus classes, that will fit a student's schedule."
Registration for an appointment can be completed online at wiu.edu/highschool (reservations are not required; walk-ins are welcome). Students must bring a letter of support from their school's guidance counselor or principal, an official transcript with junior year grades completed and an official ACT or SAT score.
Students interested in the program, but are unable to attend the event can submit an application online at wiu.edu/apply. Required documents can be sent to Undergraduate Admissions, 115 Sherman Hall, 1 University Circle, Macomb, IL 61455-1390.
