MACOMB, IL – Cambridge High School senior Hannah Akers has been awarded a Western Illinois University President's Scholarship, which covers four years of tuition, fees and a residence hall room and meal plan at the school.

Akers plans to study elementary education at WIU, with a possible endorsement in special education. She was previously awarded WIU's Centennial Honors Scholarship.

"Western has a great number of opportunities without giving off an overwhelming feeling," said Akers. "I love that you can walk everywhere on campus in a reasonable amount of time. Not only did Western appeal academically for me, but WIU also has a great selection of extracurricular activities."

In high school, Akers participated in cross country, basketball, softball, band (marching, concert, pep and jazz), choir and theatre. She was also involved with the National Honor Society, the J. Kyle Braid Leadership Foundation, the Leadership, Ethics and Values Club, Spanish Club, student council and scholastic bowl.

At Western, Akers plans to play with the Marching Leathernecks, as well as join a Christian group on campus and participate in the Centennial Honors College's mentorship program.

To qualify for the WIU President's Scholarship, students must have a minimum ACT score of 30, or minimum SAT score of 1390, and been awarded WIU's Centennial Commitment Scholarship. The scholarship decision is also weighted by the proof of volunteer and community service.
