WIU Homecoming Royalty Announced

MACOMB, IL – Voting for Western Illinois University's 2017 Homecoming royalty is now open on Purple Post.

Students can vote at bit.ly/2xnGFzc until 11:59 p.m. Wednesday Sept. 27.

The winners will be announced during the annual Yell Like Hell event, starting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28 in Western Hall.

All of the members of the royal court will be in the WIU Homecoming Parade at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30.

This year's Homecoming theme is "Storybook Homecoming: A Tale of Leatherneck Pride."

Candidates were asked where they see themselves in 10 years. This year's candidates for king and queen, by hometown, are:

ILLINOIS

Chicago - Karl Germany
is a junior law enforcement and justice administration major, representing Bayliss and Henninger halls. His campus involvement includes being a resident assistant in Bayliss Hall, the vice president of the Lambda Alpha Epsilon law enforcement fraternity and the scholastic chair of the Black Student Association."

"In 10 years, I see myself as a successful federal law enforcement officer."

Hazel Crest, IL - Kyle Mustiful-Brumfield
is a junior biology major, with a focus in medical sciences on the physical therapy track, representing Corbin-Olson halls. He is a resident assistant in Corbin-Olson, on the leadership committee for the Black Male Achievement Network, a peer mentor for Culture C.R.U. and a member of the pre-professional health club.

"In 10 years, I see myself working with professional athletes, aiding them when they get injured, and having them come back better than they were before."

East Moline, IL – Stephanie Bergland
is a senior music education major, representing She Phi Sigma Sigma for Homecoming 2017. She is involved with Phi Sigma Sigma, Order of Omega, the Lutheran Student Fellowship, Dance Marathon, the National Association for Music Education and the WIU Concert Band.

"In 10 years, I see myself married to my high school sweetheart, Coleman, and hopefully with children. I hope to be working at a university in student affairs. I will also continue to be actively involved in my church, as well as my sorority, Phi Sigma Sigma."

Machesney Park, IL – Naisha Joyner is a senior health services management major. She representing Corbin-Olson halls. She is a resident assistant, president of the e-board for the NAACP and is joining the student health advisory committee.

"Ten years from now, I hope to be a lead administrator at Chicago Rush hospital. In my spare time, I find myself reading sappy romantic love stories, and memorizing people by their zodiac signs. Need to know if your stars are aligned? Get at me."

Lockport, IL – Andrew Mueller
is a senior mathematics major, representing Sigma Chi. He has served as speaker of the senate for the Student Government Association and is a member of Phi Kappa Phi.

"In 10 years, I hope to be gainfully employed with a wife, some kids and a dog. But in the meantime, I want to give back to the campus that has given me so much. I love Western, and I'm honored to be on this year's homecoming court."

Macomb, IL – Connor Shinberger is a senior health services management major, representing Sigma Sigma Sigma, of which she serves as treasurer. She has been involved with Dance Marathon (executive board, director of corporate sponsorships and director of community relations), and is a member of the Rho Lambda National Sorority Leadership Recognition Society and the Greek Life Review Board. She also has served on the executive board for Best Buddies.

"Ten years from now, I see myself having a career that I love and have a strong passion for, a supportive family to come home to every night, and most importantly, I see myself feeling genuinely content with life."


Riverdale, IL – Jackson Russell is a senior communication major, representing Tanner Hall. He is a third-year resident assistant for Tanner Hall, is on the e-board for G.L.A.M. as male runway coach and his goal is to attend graduate school to study college student personnel.

"In 10 years, I see myself married with two children, having a dog and being in charge of a resident hall."

Round Lake, IL – Dustin Varney is a senior fire science major, representing Corbin/Olson halls.

"Within the next ten years after I graduate from Western I hope to not only pursue a job within the fire department, but to eventually become a lieutenant. A couple things about me, I love to watch Netflix and chill, long walks to the fridge, and love to encourage others to have fun. Neck up!"

Skokie, IL – Brandi Efiom is a senior political science major, representing Lincoln, Washington and Grote halls. She has served as a member of the University Honors Council.

"In 10 years, I expect to be working with leaders in the public sector to create equitable policies that acknowledge and celebrate the rich diversity that has positioned us as world leaders. These policies will allow us to continue to develop opportunities that are not only equitable, but a true reflection of our evolving culture, ideals, values and beliefs."

Wyoming, IL – Kara Downing is a junior dietetics and exercise science major, representing Lincoln, Washington and Grote halls. She is a residence assistant in Washington Hall, is part of the Centennial Honors College and is involved with the Food and Culture Club and the Exercise Science Student Association, and is currently a personal trainer at campus recreation.

"In 10 years, I see myself married, with a couple kids and I would be doing my passion, which is being a health coach of some sort where I am helping people physically and mentally to reach and maintain their health goals so they can live a healthier and happier life."


INDIANA
Camden, IN – Austin Kitchen
is a junior law enforcement and justice administration major, representing Lincoln, Washington and Grote halls.

"In 10 years, if I am extremely lucky, I hope to be married, potentially have a child or one on the way and a good career, as well as a cozy home and a black cat or pit bull/boxer mix.


PENNSYLVANIA
Clarks Green, PA – Benton Winscott
is a senior history education, representing Delta Upsilon. He is in the WIU ROTC program and is a member of Delta Upsilon (served as recruitment chair and new member educator) and Order of Omega.

"In 10 years, I see myself teaching little kiddos about the wonders of our nation's history or geography at a high school and getting my master's in school administration."
