MACOMB, IL - Western Illinois University Office Support Specialist Sarah Nelson, of the dean's office in the College of Business and Technology, has been named the Al and Elaine Goldfarb Civil Service Employee of the Month for May.

Nelson was hired in February 2014 as an intern for office support associate in the Department of Management and Marketing. In May 2014, she completed that position, and in December 2014, she was hired as an office support specialist in management and marketing through an audit. In August 2016, she moved to her current position.

According to those who nominated Nelson, she always displays a positive attitude and is willing to help anyone.

"She went above and beyond recently when planning the Executive in Residence visit," said her nominator. "She is willing to take on any project, and she goes out of her way to show extra care to staff, taking time out of her day to collect donations and purchase various gift cards across town. She shows incredible dedication and professionalism on a daily basis. The office would not run without Sarah and her dedication to the University."

In August 2010, the Goldfarbs established an endowment to permanently fund the University's Civil Service Employee of the Month award. The Goldfarb endowment is used to fund a $100 award for the recipient of the Civil Service Employee of the Month, as well as a plaque.

The WIU Foundation provides a $500 stipend for the Civil Service Employee of the Year. Western faculty, staff and administrators, as well as community members, wishing to nominate a civil service employee for the monthly recognition should contact Civil Service Employees Council (CSEC) representative Christine Staley at CD-Staley@wiu.edu.
