MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University senior media and instructional technology major Rose Steffensmeier, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, has been chosen for a prestigious scholarship that will allow her to study abroad in Japan this summer.

The $2,500 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship will allow Steffensmeier to study at Kansai Gaidai University in Hirakata, Japan. She will be there for six weeks and take Japanese language and Asian Studies coursework.

"I am very grateful for the opportunity to study in Japan this summer," said Steffensmeier. "I can't wait to learn more about the culture first hand. I couldn't be more grateful for receiving the Gilman Scholarship since it is making this study abroad opportunity possible for me."

Steffensmeier is one of about 1,200 American undergraduate students from 354 colleges and universities selected for the scholarship, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

The scholarship is named for the late Congressman Gilman, who served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 30 years and chaired the House Foreign Relations Committee.

The scholarship is designated for students to apply to their study abroad or internship program costs.
