Black History Month Celebrated at Western

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University will celebrate February as Black History Month, with this year's theme of "Kujichagulia," meaning self-determination, the second principle of the Kwanzaa holiday.

"Kujichagulia" is a celebration of commitment to building a life in our own images and interests.

This year's Black History Month calendar is sponsored by the Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center, WIU Career Development Center, the Black Male Achievement Network (BMAN), the Black Student Summit and the NAACP Collegiate Chapter. All events are open free to the public.

This month's calendar includes:

• Thursday, Feb. 9, 7 p.m., University Union Lamoine Room: Black History Month speaker Bryant Smith, co-sponsored by BMAN.

• Thursday, Feb. 16, 7 p.m., University Union Heritage Room: "Why I Love Black Women," co-sponsored by BMAN.

• Monday, Feb. 20, noon, Multicultural Center: Conscious Conversations.

• Monday, Feb. 20, 6-8 p.m., Multicultural Center: Career Night, co-sponsored with the WIU Career Development Center and Culture CRU.

• Thursday, Feb. 23, 7 p.m., Multicultural Center: Brothers' Roundtable, co-sponsored by BMAN.

• Saturday, Feb. 25, 10 a.m., Multicultural Center: Black Student Summit.

• Saturday, Feb. 25, 8 p.m., University Union Lamoine Room: Black Excellence Ball, sponsored by the WIU NAACP Collegiate Chapter.
