MACOMB, IL — Fifty people went "under" the clippers on Sunday at Western Illinois University as part of the annual St. Baldrick's event.

According to Jen Zarate, Tanner Hall assistant complex director, the 2016 Tanner Hall event raised more than $11,000 for the St. Baldrick's Foundation. Hundreds of individuals donated their time, fundraising abilities and willingness to "go bald" to help the national organization that raises awareness and funds to help cure kids' cancer. Money was raised by cash donations, online pledges, and proceeds from a cement stone project, which was created by the Western Illinois Construction Management Association (WICMA).

Special guests at Sunday's event included the 50 individuals who shaved their heads; the stylists from Michael's Hair Designers, Blades and Great Clips, who donated their time for the event; Miss Iowa 2015 Taylor Wiebers; and Macomb Mayor Mike Inman.

The top fundraising teams were The Beards Go Too ($2,035), T5 Sorority ($900) and Resident Assistant Council ($848.13). The top fundraising individuals were Brandon Colley, a University Technology employee ($1,755), Jillian Ross, a senior recreation, park and tourism administration major ($980) and Carina Carpenter, a sophomore pre-social work major and Tanner Hall resident assistant ($900).

"We would like to extend our deepest appreciation to our staff and volunteers, all whom worked so hard to get this event together, and to our stylists from Michael's Blades, and Great Clips of Macomb, and to Miss Iowa and Mayor Inman, who donated their time," Zarate added.

Since 2000, St. Baldrick's Foundation volunteers nationwide have organized more than 11,000 events, shaving nearly 552,000 heads and raising more than $178 million for life-saving childhood cancer research.
