MACOMB, IL -- "The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

Western Illinois University students make a difference on their campuses and in their communities every day, and one WIU student organization will host a benefit dinner later this month to raise funds to benefit their organization, which exists to benefit others.

The WIU Chapter of Best Buddies will host a "Spread the Word to End the Word" spaghetti dinner fundraiser from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 23 at the Macomb American Legion, 221 E. Washington St. Tickets are $5 in advance ($7 at the door).

Best Buddies is a nonprofit national organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Western students are matched in a one-on-one friendship with a member of the Macomb community with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Western's chapter, which is advised by Amy Burke, communication sciences and disorders instructor, has 47 members and 28 community residents.

To purchase tickets, contact Burke at AR-Burke@wiu.edu or Natasha Garcia at N-Garcia3@wiu.edu or any Best Buddy member. Visit the WIU Best Buddies Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/wiubestbuddies/?fref=ts to learn more about the WIU organization.
