Western Courier Earns Nine Awards from ICPA

MACOMB, IL - The Illinois College Press Association (ICPA) honored the Western Courier, the student-run newspaper at Western Illinois University, with eight awards at the association's annual convention in Chicago Saturday-Sunday, February 21-22.

"It's gratifying to see the Courier staff recognized for all the hard work they put into producing the paper," said Rich Moreno, director of Student Publications and adviser to the Courier. "They have earned these honors, and I'm really proud of them."

Courier staff members earning ICPA awards included:

• First Place, Shoot Chicago Photo Contest, Nick Stewart, senior meteorology major, Chicago

• Third Place, Best Sports Photo, Stewart

• Third Place, Best Feature Photo, Stewart

• Honorable Mention, Best Sports Page Design, Stewart

• Honorable Mention, Best Sports Page Design, Cody Rivera, junior journalism major, Quincy, IL

• Honorable Mention, Best Sports Page Design, Justin Kozar, senior marketing major, Plainfield, IL

• Second Place, Best Headline Writing, Jacqueline Covey, senior journalism major, Plainfield, IL

• Honorable Mention, Best Column (excluding sports), Sandra Sepaniak, senior journalism and Spanish major, Geneseo, IL

• Honorable Mention, Best Full-Page Advertisement, David Vallandingham, junior broadcasting and graphic communication major, Burlington, IA

The ICPA membership includes 36 college and university papers in Illinois. ICPA awards were judged by a panel of professional newspaper journalists from papers throughout the state.
