MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University Department of Communication's 23rd annual Wayne N. Thompson Lecture will be held at 5 p.m. Monday, March 30 in the University Union's Sandburg Theatre.

This year's lecture will be delivered by George Mason University Professor Kevin Wright, who will speak about, "More than Medicine: Online Social Support for Individuals Facing Stigmatized Health Issues."

Much of Wright's research focuses on social support processes and health outcomes in both face-to-face and computer-mediated contexts. He has authored five books and more than 70 articles and book chapters. Wright's research has been published in numerous scholarly communication journals.

Between 2007-2010, Wright was the editor of the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, published by the International Communication Association. He also serves on the editorial boards of numerous communication journals and frequently presents at communication conferences.

The lecture is named for alumnus Wayne Thompson. An endowment in his name provides support for a number of departmental programs which enhance learning and scholarship in the field of communication, including a lecture by a prominent communication scholar.
