MACOMB, IL -- As the winter months are setting in upon west central Illinois, Western Illinois University is preparing for winter maintenance, including setting priority snow removal routes.

The priority snow removal routes are a result of the coordinated efforts of Facilities Management and the WIU Disability Resource Center (DRC). While Facilities Management landscape maintenance staff will remove ice and snow from all campus walkways, designated pedestrian areas and parking lots on the priority route will be cleared first. Priority routes are listed and a map is available at wiu.edu/vpas/fm.

According to Landscape Maintenance Superintendent Tara Beal, when snowfall occurs rapidly, landscape maintenance staff clear the priority routes first, and will continue to work on the priority routes to maintain accessibility, before clearing other areas of campus. Additional landscape maintenance staff will be called in as necessary to keep all campus routes, parking lots and streets clear and open to pedestrians and vehicles. Western Avenue, Adams Street and University Drive are owned and maintained by the City of Macomb.

This year, Landscape Maintenance and the DRC worked with student representatives and housing and dining, equal opportunity and access and Go West staff to review issues and concerns along the route. In addition, Facilities Management is renting an additional backhoe to assist with snow removal in parking lots; has an expanded contract in place with an external vendor to remove snow from six parking lots on an on-call basis; and has purchased an alternative de-icer for new parking lots and walks to preserve the integrity of the concrete.

To report issues with snow removal, contact Facilities Management at (309) 298-1834. For more information on the priority snow removal route, contact Beal at (309) 298-1834, ext. 255 or TS-Beal@wiu.edu. For more information on campus accessibility, contact the Office of Equal Opportunity and Access at 298-1977 or the Disability Resource Center at 298-2512.
