MACOMB, IL -- Fifty years ago, the first group of students from Burma arrived at Western Illinois University, paving the way for more than 200 others throughout the years. During the fourth of July holiday weekend, under the direction of WIU Physics Professor Emeritus Yan Lwin, numerous alumni from Burma will join together again in Macomb to celebrate their time at their alma mater.

According to Lwin, who retired in 2006 after 41 years at WIU, the four-day event is designed to reunite Burmese alumni, and to discuss the changes forthcoming in 2015 for the country.

"As we celebrate the fourth of July, we must be thankful for all of the the opportunities we received and how we are cared for in this great nation," Lwin said. "It's fitting for us to gather to celebrate our great nation, to reminisce about our time at Western and to work together to help move our country forward."

The reunion will be held on the WIU campus. In addition, day trips throughout Illinois are a part of the four-day event.
