MACOMB, IL — The Western Illinois University Student Alumni Leadership Council (SALC) will join nearly 100 educational institutions worldwide Thursday, Feb. 27 to participate in the second annual Student Engagement and Philanthropy Day. The initiative, organized by CASE Affiliated Student Advancement Programs, is designed to increase student understanding of philanthropy and grow engagement on campuses.

Institutions from the United States, England, Canada, Australia and other countries will participate in the event through various activities, including "thank-a-thons," day-long social media campaigns and student video interviews on what giving means to them.

SALC, in collaboration with the WIU Annual Fund, will host a Thank You Campaign Feb. 27, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., recognizing the continued support and participation WIU and the Alumni Association have received from local alumni, faculty, staff, community members and friends over the past year. WIU students will gather at the University Union concourse to send more than 500 handwritten thank-you notes to alumni in the Macomb area. There will also be an opportunity for students to sign thank-you notes before the men's basketball game on Feb. 27.

SALC has invited the entire student body to join in this outreach effort. Check the WIU Alumni Association Facebook fan page on Feb. 28 to catch the latest thank you messages from current students and members of SALC.

"What makes philanthropy so special is that it's entirely voluntary," said Vice President for Advancement and Public Services Brad Bainter. "Each year, more than 13,000 people contribute to WIU, enhancing the quality of the educational experience and lessening the financial burdens for our students. It is powerful and inspiring, and it's our collective community."

CASE ASAP provides programming, services and resources in advancement, including fundraising and alumni relations, for students and advisers at student alumni associations, student foundations and similar organizations at colleges and universities that are members of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

Student Engagement and Philanthropy Day is part of CASE ASAP's goal to foster and enhance student involvement in all areas of advancement – including fundraising, alumni relations, communications and marketing.

"Western has a wonderful group of alumni, faculty, staff and students who are all very active and talented in what they do," said WIU student SALC Student Engagement and Philanthropy coordinator Alexis Kathalynas, of Genoa, IL. "We are very thankful to have CASE ASAP to give these people the outstanding recognition and appreciation that they deserve."
