Western Illinois Horn Festival 2013 April 14

MACOMB, IL –The Western Illinois Horn Festival 2013, on Sunday, April 14 in the College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC) Recital Hall on the Western Illinois University campus, will feature two guest clinicians/artists along with Western's horn Professor Randall Faust and horn alumni.

Hornists are invited to participate in the many activities of the festival and the recitals, concerts and lectures are open free to the public.

Guest professors who will conduct clinics are Edwin C. "Ted" Thayer and Lisa Bontrager.

Thayer is the principal hornist emeritus for the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) in Washington D.C., where he performed and recorded with renowned conductors Dorati, Rostropovich and Slatkin. He has also served as a faculty member at George Mason University and the renowned Kendall Betts Horn Camp.

Thayer has also performed with the Richmond Woodwind Quintet, the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, the Richmond Symphonietta, the U.S. Army Band and the NSO Brass Principals Quintet. He represented the NSO at the World Philharmonic Concert in 1986 and was a hornist for the Europe Chamber Ensemble and the 20th Century Consort.

As a professor at The Pennsylvania State University, Bontrager has performed throughout the U.S., Europe and Japan. Her discography includes recordings with the Pennsylvania Woodwind Quintet, the Millennium Brass and the Mirror Image Horn Duo.

Her WIU festival performances will include works from her solo compact discs "Hunter's Moon" and Harambee." She plays principal horn for the Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra and Music and is the tenor hornist for the Brass Band of Battle Creek. She is an elected member of the Advisory Council of the International Horn Society.

Faust is a hornist for Western's in-residence Camerata Woodwind Quintet and LaMoine Brass Quintet. He is past president of both the International Horn Society and the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors. He was host of the 41st International Horn Symposium held on campus in June 2009.

10 a.m. Clinic by Bontrager
1 p.m. Opening recital by WIU hornists and guests
2 p.m. Panel on horn teaching: Thayer, Bontrager and Faust
3 p.m. Masterclass by Thayer
4 p.m. Festival Horn Ensemble rehearsal
7:30 p.m. Recital by guest hornists, WIU hornists and Festival Horn Choir

At 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, Professor Lisa Bontrager will present a pre-festival lecture on "The Importance of A Mentor," in Browne Hall, room 220. The lecture is sponsored by the WIU Visiting Lectures Committee and is free to the WIU community.
