MACOMB/MOLINE, IL -- With the majority of people using smartphones and other mobile devices to stay connected to the world around them, Western Illinois University's Center for Innovation in Teaching and Research (CITR) decided to use mobile messaging as another way to keep WIU students informed of course-related information.

According to CITR Director Roger Runquist, the system, simply called WIU TextR, was launched just before Spring Break. WIU TextR is used only to send individualized class and advising-related text messages to students, such as last-minute class cancellations and room changes. Students can opt out at any time.

"WIU TextR is another way for faculty and advisers to contact the students they serve. Faculty can use the new system by accessing CITR's Faculty Electronic Resources and clicking the "Current Term Course Listing" link," Runquist explained.
