New Music Festival at WIU March 4-5

MACOMB, IL - - The 26th annual New Music Festival at Western Illinois University, Monday-Tuesday, March 4-5, will feature guest artist Michael Jon Fink from the California Institute of the Arts, as well as WIU School of Music faculty and students.

The New Music Festival provides the western Illinois community the opportunity to meet recognized composers and performers and to an experience and better understand the music of our time, said WIU Professor of Music Theory and Composition James Caldwell.

Concerts will be held in the College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC) Recital Hall. Concert and panel schedules are:

Monday, March 4
9 a.m.- noon: Presentations by composer Fink (9 a.m.- 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.- noon Browne 207;
10 a.m.-11 a.m. Browne Hall 215)

7:30 p.m. Concert I: music by Caldwell, Fink, Professor Randall Faust, Associate Professor John Mindeman, Professor Paul Paccione and Professor James Romig

Tuesday, March 5
9- 9:50 a.m.; 11- 11:50 a.m.: Composer panel discussions (Browne Hall 207)

2 p.m.: Concert II: WIU Student Composer Concert

3- 4:30 p.m.: Composers' Workshop

7:30 p.m.: Concert III: music by Caldwell, Fink, Paccione, Romig, Professor John Cooper and Associate Professor Julieta Mihai

All events are open free to the public.

Fink has written instrumental and electronic music that has been performed throughout the U.S., Europe and Japan. He has been a composer and improviser for new music groups The Negative Band, Musica Veneris Nocturnus, Stillife and Ghost Duo. Fink has composed incidental music for two plays of W. B. Yeats and for "Forêts," by Wajdi Mouawad. His works have appeared on the Contagion, Cold Blue, C.R.I., Trance Port, Raptoria Caam and Wire Tapper labels.
