Trumpeter Marvin Stamm to Join WIU's 40th Jazz Festival Feb. 14-16

MACOMB, IL - - Renowned trumpeter Marvin Stamm will swing into Macomb as the featured guest of the 40th annual Western Illinois University Jazz Festival Thursday, Feb. 14 - Saturday, Feb. 16.

The festival will kick off with a jam session at 7 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 14) at Café Aroma,
301 University Dr.

On Friday (Feb. 15), the WIU Jazz Studio Orchestra will perform with Stamm at 7:30 p.m. in the College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC) Recital Hall. Tickets ($15 for the public; $8 for senior citizens; and $6 for students) are available at the Hainline Theatre box office.

Stamm was discovered for his musical talents while attending North Texas State University. Since then he has performed with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, Duke Pearson Big Band, the Benny Goodman Sextet and Frank Sinatra. Stamm performs with symphony orchestras across the United States and regularly performs with the George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band and the Westchester Jazz Orchestra. He has recorded with Bill Evans, Quincy Jones, Olive Nelson, Duke Pearson, Thad Jones, Wes Montgomery, Freddie Hubbard, Stanley Turrentine, Patrick Williams, Michel Legrand, Lena Horne and Frank Foster

Saturday (Feb. 16) will feature competitions from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. for junior high and high school jazz bands and ensembles. Clinics by Stamm and the WIU Jazz Faculty and performances by WIU Jazz Studio Orchestra, Hopper Jazztet and Stamm are also scheduled. Tickets ($7 for the public; $5 for senior citizens and students) are available at the Hainline Theatre box office, phone (309) 298-2900, from noon to 5 p.m. weekdays, or at wiu.edu/BCA click on "Get Tickets."

9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Junior High and High School Band Competitions- various locations
10-11 a.m. and noon - 1 p.m. Clinics by Stamm - Location to be announced
11 a.m.-noon and 1-2 p.m. Clinics by WIU School of Music Jazz Studies Faculty - TBA
3 p.m. WIU Jazz Studio Orchestra concert featuring Stamm - Grand Ballroom, University Union
6:15 p.m. Hopper Jazztet concert - Grand Ballroom, University Union
