Communication Student Society Launches Quad Cities Chapter

After several years on the Macomb campus, Western Illinois University's Communication Student Society (CSS), in the Department of Communication, organized a new chapter at the Quad Cities campus in Moline (IL) this fall.

"Now that the communication major is present at the Quad Cities campus, there is a need for a student group to accompany the major, and CSS is the way to go," said Associate Communication Professor Mary Hogg, the WIU-QC faculty adviser.

The purpose of CSS is two-fold: to help students further understand and promote the discipline of communication, and to help students understand the wide range of career options available to graduates of WIU with communication majors and minors.

Hogg said there will be meetings where the emphasis will be a service project, a social event, or a speaker talking about some aspect of communication, or someone from Career Services speaking about job search strategies or other topics.

During the Fall 2012 semester, the Quad Cities CSS group organized a "Debate Watch" to watch the presidential debates and to critique the debaters and commentators in true "public speaking critique" style. One of the communication majors and vice president of the CSS group in Moline, Ioanna Efstathiou, said, "this is a chance for us to show our professors that we do learn concepts from their classes, and we can demonstrate that we know what we're doing."

Also in the fall, the CSS group planned and executed a bake sale to coincide with the staging of some Halloween festivities held in the new Riverfront campus building.

CSS in the Quad Cities meets once a month and will soon hold a canned food collection in conjunction with the showing of the documentary, "Poor Kids," documenting four Quad Cities area children who live in poverty.

Current officers for the WIU-QC chapter of the Communication Student Society are Leah Henson, president; Ioanna Efstathiou, vice president; Paula LisenBee, secretary (who will be replaced by Angela Correll beginning second semester) and Humberto Aguirre, treasurer.

All officers are either communication majors or communication minors.
