IIRA Sustainability Brownbaggers Fall 2012

MACOMB, IL -- The Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs (IIRA) at Western Illinois University will once again sponsor a series of Sustainability Brownbaggers lunch-time conversation events. The one-hour presentations, held over the lunch hour from 12:30–1:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, are described as "conversations for the natural and social sciences, business and the arts and humanities."

The Sustainability Brownbaggers events will be held in WIU's Leslie F. Malpass Library, fourth floor. Individuals are welcome to bring their lunches to each event. Upcoming presentations include:

Tuesday, Sept. 25: "Green Chemistry: Retooling of Chemistry and Making It More Sustainable"
Presented by: T.K. Vinod, professor, WIU chemistry dept.

Tuesday, Oct. 2: "Sustainability on the Upper Mississippi River"
Presented by: Claudia Emken, Mississippi River Network

Tuesday, Oct. 9: "Green Politics"
Presented by: Peter Cole, professor, WIU history dept.; Daniel Ogbaharya, instructor, WIU political science dept.; Staci Buster, junior, interdisciplinary studies major; and Kristin Davis, senior, marketing major

Tuesday, Oct. 16: "An Overview of Sustainability in the Fashion Industry: Sustainable Technologies"
Presented by: Mijeong Noh, assistant professor, WIU dietetics, fashion merchandising and hospitality dept.

Tuesday, Oct. 23: "The Aftermath of Hurricane Katrina"
Presented by: Heather McIlvaine-Newsad, professor, WIU sociology and anthropology dept.

Tuesday, Oct. 30: "150th Anniversary of the Land Grant System"
Presented by: Joel Gruver, assistant professor, WIU School of Agriculture

Tuesday, Nov. 13: "Earth Cafe"
Presented by: Victoria Livingston, instructor, WIU biological sciences dept., and Environmental Studies 401 students

The Sustainability Brownbaggers series is presented in cooperation with Western Illinois University Libraries, the WIU Sustainability Committee, the WIU Center for Innovation in Teaching and Research (CITR), WIU Centennial Honors College, the WIU Institute for Environmental Studies and WIU Employee Wellness.
