Board of Trustees Bachelor of Arts Degree
The Underwater Classroom
Board of Trustees Bachelor of Arts students can take independent study and online courses almost anywhere. There is no better example of this than that of former sailor Stephen Johnson, who took WIU courses while stationed on a submarine.
“Onboard the sub was an Education Services Officer,” said Stephen. “Most of the course study was completed on a computer through CD modules. Some of the tests were computer based, as well. The ESO would proctor tests and take all written assignments. When the sub pulled into port, he mailed the paperwork off to WIU. It’s not for everyone. It takes a lot of motivation and discipline to complete courses like this.”
Stephen looked ahead to employment after leaving the military and knew that his military experience combined with a bachelor's degree would help him find a higher paying job. Although Stephen has not yet completed his final courses, the degree program is helping him in the civilian world. His current employer recently promoted him to a managerial position because of the persistence with which he is pursuing his degree.
“The fact that I was completing courses steadily showed management my dedication and drive to excel,” said Stephen.
