Graduate Council Minutes - February 8, 2021

I. STUDENT APPEALS
A. Education
1. Request to transfer more than 12 s.h. into a doctoral program
Dr. Yager was in attendance and provided details about the application timeline. The transcripts were reviewed by the previous graduate coordinator and the student has twenty-one hours that would be equivalent to our courses. Dr. Locke asked for clarification about the courses would replace and what makes them a good fit with the program. Dr. Yager responded that there is a lot of flexibility with the courses for electives. Discussion was held about the number of transfer hours allowed for doctoral programs and if electives should be considered for transfers.
Motion: To deny the request. (Hyde/Anderson)

II. GRADUATE FACULTY – FULL MEMBERSHIP
A. Jason Hawkins, Assistant Professor, Music
Dr. Brown was in attendance and noted that his letter of support provided a lot of information. He added that Dr. Hawkins has become a leader in the School of Music and launched the Music Education emphasis where he needs to be able to chair capstone projects. He currently serves as the advisor and an instructor for this emphasis. Dr. Locke added that the students recruited for this emphasis are very high quality.
Motion: To approve the request. (McQuillan/Hammersley)

B. Brian Winnie, Assistant Professor, Music
Dr. Brown explained that Dr. Winnie is the Director of Choral Activities for the School of Music and is serving as the interim graduate coordinator for this semester. He is working more with graduate students and is being asked to serve as chair on exit option committees. Dr. Locke added that he has recruited numerous students because of his area of specialization.
Motion: To approve the request. (Anderson/Roberts)

III. ANNOUNCEMENTS
A. Academic integrity incident reports filed in the School of Graduate Studies, December 2020 (0)
B. Graduate Research Conference
Ms. Schulz announced that the conference is being moved to a virtual format and will take place on April 16. The announcement just went out to all graduate students and faculty but there are already two submissions. The deadline for submissions is February 26. Dr. McQuillan added that the presentations would likely be prerecorded with opportunities for live questions after each presentation.
C. Graduate Student Research and Professional Development Fund
Ms. Schulz reminded the spring sub-committee that they will need to meet in the first two weeks of March to determine the recipients of the award. The spring sub-committee consists of Dr. Hammersley, Dr. Hyde, Dr. Locke, and Dr. McQuillan.
IV. OTHER BUSINESS
Dr. Mossman updated the Council on the HLC accreditation visit. More emphasis will be placed on the written reports due to the virtual format of the visit. Everything is almost ready.
