IV. NEW BUSINESS

A. Grade appeal protocol after an academic integrity violation

Dr. Parsons explained that there has recently been a situation regarding the proper procedure for academic integrity violations. She noted that specifically there has been question as to if a student is allowed to file a grade appeal in response to a penalty given as the result of an academic integrity violation. Council members discussed the policy with Ms. Schulz reading specific sections of the policy aloud at the meeting. Discussion points included that faculty should have the ability to assign the appropriate penalty and that the policy clearly states that the assigned penalty is at the sole discretion of the faculty.  The policy also clearly states appropriate penalty options. It was noted by Council members that some faculty already avoid submitting reports because of the appeals process. Dr. Parsons stated that this should not be happening and that the reports should be submitted to the Graduate Office for graduate student violation. Council members suggested that it might be helpful to create possible guidelines for faculty to put in their syllabus.

Motion: To state that a student cannot submit a grade appeal in response to a penalty resulting from an academic integrity violation. (Stryker/Ehrlich)
MOTION CARRIED 6 YES – 0 NO – 1 AB
