I. STUDENT APPEALS

A. Request for a late withdrawal

Dr. Polley was present to answer questions from the Graduate Council.

II. ANNOUNCEMENTS

A. Academic integrity incident reports filed in the School of Graduate Studies, November 2016 (0)

B. Requests to serve as a reader on exit option committee, November 2016 (0)

C. Graduate Student Research and Professional Development Fund Recipients

Ms. Dodson announced the name and amount awarded to each of the fund recipients for the Fall 2016 awards, and stated the list is also available on the Graduate School website. A total of $3000 was awarded to 11 graduate students.

D. Graduate Research Conference

Dr. Parsons provided information on the fourth annual Graduate Research Conference which will be held March 3, 2017, and announced that Dr. Chris Carpenter of the Communication department will be the keynote speaker for the conference. Application and deadline information is available on the Graduate School website.


III. GRADUATE CURRICULUM

A. History

1. Request to Change Program Requirements

a. Plan I, Thesis

b. Plan II, Special/Applied Project

c. Plan III, General Coursework          

Dr. Woell addressed background for the proposed changes as outlined for all three exit options. The written exam addition to Plan I is to assure more equitable assessment of student knowledge as well as to prevent students choosing Plan I as an assumed easier exit option. Changes to the format for the written exam and the oral exam for Plans II and III will provide a better base to assess a student’s performance throughout the program. Dr. Hyde noted typos in the requests.

2. Request for Integrated Baccalaureate and Master’s Degree Program

a. Bachelor/Master of Arts in History

Dr. Woell responded to questions concerning the integrated program, to be offered Fall 2017, if approved. Dr. Parsons shared that the integrated program is a benefit to WIU’s higher achieving undergraduate students who choose to remain at WIU for their graduate degree.

B. Law Enforcement and Justice Administration

1. Request for a New Graduate (500 or 600-level) Course

a. LEJA 520, Restorative Justice: Principals, Practices and Implementation, 3 s.h.

Dr. McCrary represented the School of Law Enforcement and Justice Administration and responded to questions from the Council members. The course will give administrators strategies for addressing all aspects of restorative justice, providing a holistic approach for victims, law enforcement, courts, corrections, and communities. It will not be a required course, may be taken first or second year of the LEJA program, and will be available Fall 2017, if approved.
