Speech Pathology and Audiology

about

Speech Pathology & Audiology - About Us home icon

Western Illinois University Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology is proud of the competent and compassionate clinicians we produce from our program. Connections are important and we base much of what we do on facilitating those connections. Faculty teach courses specific to their areas of interest, but they are also providing the supervision in clinic for those same clients. Each faculty member is licensed and certified as an audiologist and/or speech-language pathologist. We bring years of clinical experience from hospitals, schools, industry, specialty clinics, skilled nursing facilities, home health, and private practice. We aim to provide our students with the tools they will need to become independent clinical professionals.

Availability

WIU is a teaching institution and WIU Speech-Language Hearing Clinic is a student learning environment and therefore is open during the academic school year and a six-week summer session when students are on-campus taking courses. The clinic is not open between semesters or when WIU is closed for holidays and breaks.

Speech Therapy appointments are scheduled by semester and are for the duration of the semester. Appointments are first come, first serve. A current School IEP or Speech Diagnostic Report is required before services can be offered. Our clinic offers a limited number of Speech Diagnostic appointments each semester. To be added to the Speech Diagnostic waiting list, our Clinic Intake forms must be completed and returned to us. Please contact our office for more information.

Equity & Equality Group

Our department proudly offers a student-organized, student-led equity & equality group. Our mission is to increase knowledge and awareness of the inequities many of the clients we serve as speech pathologists and audiologists face. Topics such as racial biases, socioeconomic issues, inequality in the school system, inequality in our healthcare system, and the LGBTQ community are discussed in monthly or biweekly meetings. Facts and statistics are presented on the chosen topic, followed by discussions on how such issues may impact our clients and how we can navigate each situation to ensure our clients receive the best possible services across all settings.

For more information, contact Angi Martin (AL-Martin6@wiu.edu).
