Communication Minor

The School of Communication and Media offers a Communication minor at the Macomb campus as well as online. A minor in Communication will complement numerous existing majors, as understanding strategies of communication is one of the greatest assets that one can have in virtually every career. The communication minor will provide knowledge and training that would enhance a variety of careers, such as sales, public relations, advertising, personnel, human resources, education, training, and management, just to name a few.

Some examples of majors that would be complemented by a Communication minor include:

  • English majors who are interested in rhetorical perspectives on literature
  • Psychology and Sociology majors who believe that communication is central to their work
  • Science majors who need to know how to present their ideas effectively for both science and non-science audiences
  • Business majors who will work in groups and teams

What are the degree requirements for a Communication minor?

Students minoring in Communication will need to complete a total of 18 semester hours (SH) that include the following:

  • COMM 130 – Introduction to Human Communication (3)
  • COMM 247 – Argumentation (3)
  • Three of the following four classes:
    • COMM 312 – Rhetorical Theory & Criticism (3)
    • COMM 343 – Organizational Communication (3)
    • COMM 344 – Interpersonal Communication (3)
    • COMM 356 – Introduction to Persuasion (3)
  • And one elective course from COMM at the 300/400 level (3)
