Educator Preparation

Undergraduate Teacher Education Programs

Now is great time to become a teacher. The WIU teacher education program faculty will prepare you to be ready for the classroom on day one. We use a variety of teaching methods to help you create learning environments that use the latest teaching technologies to bring the real world into the classroom.

WIU offers the following approved programs for initial licensure:
Elementary Education

The Elementary Education program is designed for those seeking to teach in the Elementary School setting. This program is fully aligned with the licensing guidelines from the State of Illinois, providing students with the necessary coursework and field experiences to qualify for an Illinois Professional Educators License in Elementary Education. There are four options within the Elementary Education major.


Middle Level Education

The Middle School Education program is designed for those seeking to teach in the Middle School setting. This program is fully aligned with the new licensing guidelines from the Illinois State Board of Education, providing students with the necessary coursework and field experiences to qualify for an Illinois Professional Educators License in Middle Level Education (grades 5-8).



Secondary Education

The Secondary Education programs are designed for those seeking to teach in the High School setting. The programs are fully aligned with the licensing guidelines from the Illinois State Board of Education, providing students with the necessary coursework and field experiences to qualify for an Illinois Professional Educators License in Secondary Education (grades 9-12).



K-12 Education

The K-12 Education programs are designed for those seeking to teach a specialized content area across age groups. The programs are fully aligned with the licensing guidelines from the Illinois State Board of Education, providing students with the necessary coursework and field experiences to qualify for an Illinois Professional Educators License in K-12 Education (Kindergarten through 12th grade).
