Dr. Simonson teaches courses in educational leadership to aspiring principals and school leaders on the Macomb and Quad Cities Campuses. His research interests include all aspects of stress on school administrators, with a specific focus on the relationship of stress and the physical wellness of Illinois superintendents. In addition, Dr. Simonson is interested in the professional development of current principals, with a focus on school improvement and the development of Instructional Leadership Teams.

Dr. Simonson is a former high school American history teacher, middle school principal, and superintendent of schools. He and his wife Chris have two children and a granddaughter.
