Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society
About
Our Phi Delta chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, with approximately 35 members in Macomb and the Quad Cities, was established at Western Illinois University in 1941, making it one of the oldest chapters in the country. Chapter members have the opportunity to participate in scholarly and social activities at the local, regional, and national levels.
- Locally, students may attend potluck dinners held at the homes of English faculty each semester, may participate in campus service projects and book drives, may serve as chapter officers, may attend our annual spring picnic, and may help to select our annual speaker. Students also help create, edit, and publish one of our English department's magazines The Mirror and the Lamp.
- Regionally, students may present their academic papers at conferences in the Midwest, including our own chapter’s conference held each fall at Western Illinois University.
- Nationally, students may apply to give critical or creative paper presentations at the juried international convention held each spring. We have sent students to present at the convention each of the past six years, when the convention was held in cities such as New Orleans, Portland, Savannah, and Minneapolis. Students may also submit their critical papers, short stories, poems, and creative non-fiction for publication in the society’s peer-reviewed journals, The Sigma Tau Delta Review and The Rectangle . Chapter members are also eligible to apply for Sigma Tau Delta scholarships and summer internships.
