Interlibrary Loan Policies

General

  • Interlibrary Loan service is available to WIU faculty, staff, students, and retirees.
  • We reserve the right to limit the number of requests.
  • Individuals order ILL requests online. This means we cannot accept orders over the phone, though we can talk you through ordering if you need help.
  • An email will notify you when an ILL item has come in. You must bring your WIU or other picture ID to pick it up. We cannot check your item out to anyone except you.
  • Textbooks are rarely available through ILLiad.
  • We must follow all rules of the lending library. Three come up often:
    • If the condition of the material when returned is not satisfactory, the lending lilbrary determines the fine.
    • If the lending library restricts use to "Library use only," then you can only use the item in our building.
    • ILLiad renewals are not automatic. They depend on the lending library and must be submitted online.

Copyright

The WIU Malpass Library’s Interlibrary Loan Office follows the fair use guidelines of the Copyright Law. Most Interlibrary Loan requests are obtained at no charge because of our consortial relationships. However, the guidelines for U.S. Copyright Law (Title 17 U.S. Code) outline situations in which copyright fees would have to be paid:

  • Anytime a library requests more than FIVE articles from ONE PERIODICAL TITLE (JOURNAL/ MAGAZINE) during a calendar year, if those articles were published in the five years prior to date of request.
  • Any time a library requests more than ONE article that appears in a SINGLE ISSUE of a PERIODICAL during a calendar year, if those articles were published in the five years prior to date of request.

If the articles are more than 5 years old, the limits no longer apply. Under the current budgetary constraints, the library does not subsidize copyright fees.
