Library Services for Faculty

To check out materials at WIU libraries, faculty should present their WIU ID card that displays their 9-digit university ID number, together with the library's 21711 prefix (e.g., 21711xxxYYYzzz) This 14-digit library ID is encoded as a barcode on the card.

Books

Books are checked out to faculty for an initial loan period of 16 weeks. Two further renewals of 16 weeks each are allowed. There is no limit to the number of books that may be checked out at any one time.

Holds

We do not hold books for patrons. As a member of the 86-library CARLI consortium it is, in general, easier to obtain unavailable books from elsewhere than to try to recall books from our patrons. We do occasionally recall books needed for reserve.

MyAccount

Library patrons have access to their library account via the WIU Library Catalog (WestCat). The MyAccount function lists books checked out, books borrowed from other libraries, the status of I-Share requests, fine information and the ability to renew books (limits permitting).

Periodicals

Periodicals are a non-circulating collection. An exception is made for faculty to borrow journals for a 3-day check out period for teaching and research purposes.

Surrogate Checkout

Faculty may appoint a student to act as a surrogate to check out library materials in the faculty member’s name and ID. A list of surrogates is held in the Access Services (Circulation) unit. To add your surrogate to the list, please complete and return the surrogate checkout form. Library policy prohibits check out of items to persons presenting another's ID card, and we strongly urge faculty not to ask students to obtain books for them (faculty) on the student’s own ID!

Surrogate Checkout Procedure

Surrogates are required to present their student ID for identification, and state the name of the faculty member. The checkout service includes books, media, and government publications in the online catalog, which may be checked out for the normal borrowing period. Periodicals may be checked out for three days only. Checkout of material takes place at the Access Services (Circulation) desk on the main level of Malpass Library.
