Facilities Management
Western Illinois University Facilities Management employs full-time professional, technical, clerical, and trades personnel. The workforce expands as needed by utilizing temporary workers and students during crucial summer maintenance activities. The mission of Facilities Management is to maintain and enhance the campus physical environment in support of the academic environment, student residence halls, recreational areas, and other functions related to the university.
Departments
Facilities Management prioritizes our work with the mission of WIU in mind at all times. We work together with the campus community to ensure that we provide the best environment for our faculty, staff, and students. Our department consists of groups which work together seamlessly to ensure our campus is a safe, beautiful, and comfortable place to work and learn.
Work Order Control
Work Order Control is the first step for all of your individualized work order needs. Whether you have a light out, extra cleaning needs, hazardous or non-hazardous waste removal, water leak, your room is too hot or too cold, shredding services, etc. Our friendly staff will work with your building representatives to resolve work order requests by receiving, recording, scheduling, and distributing worker orders to the proper departments. Building Services
Building Services is dedicated to maintaining the interior physical appearance of our campus. Building Service Workers clean, disinfect, and sanitize all departments, classrooms, and buildings. This department also moves furniture, boxes, and equipment on campus, changes light bulbs, recycling, and collects material for shredding services. They are the main point of contact for any pest control and other non-hazardous waste issues.
Landscape Maintenance
Landscape Maintenance is responsible for maintaining the exterior physical appearance of campus and our campus safety. They provide services to campus lawns, gardens, trees, athletic fields, pick up litter,empty exterior trash receptacles, and repairpavement. They also provide excavation and hauling services for utility repairs on campus, and stand ready at all hours during the winter season removal of snow and ice.
Transportation Services
Transportation Services maintains a fleet of university-rental and department-issued vehicles, consisting of cars, trucks, twelve to fifteen passenger vans, and a minibus. On average, our university vehicles travel more than one million miles a year. They are dedicated to all maintenance and upkeep of these vehicles to ensure you have a safe trip to and from your destination.
Facilities Planning and Construction
Facilities Planning and Construction oversees all remodeling, renovation, demolition, and new construction projects on campus. They estimate the projects in-house or work with outside design professionals, coordinate with Architectural and Engineering firms to make sure the design needs are met, and coordinate with contractors on campus to make sure the faculty, staff, and students are kept safe during the construction processes. Additionally, they keep blueprints and record documents of construction projects for the maintenance staff to help with future repair needs
Building Maintenance
Building Maintenance is responsible for maintaining all building facades, roofs, and interior finishes of all buildings on campus. In addition, they provide maintenance to the elevators and electrical distribution throughout the WIU campus.
Mechanical Maintenance
The Mechanical Maintenance department is responsible for the repair and maintenance of building Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and foodservice equipment throughout the campus. They maintain all building systems, including residence halls and dining centers. They are also responsible for the removal of all hazardous waste and asbestos abatement related to the buildings.
Environmental Health and Safety
Environmental Health and Safety is within Facilities Planning and Construction. They are responsible for securing permits for environmental issues like prescribed burns or abatement, training FM staff on OSHA and EPA regulations, ensuring federal and state compliance throughout campus, removal of hazardous waste related to laboratories and waste from building up-keep, chemical management, licensing for lifts, PPE selection for jobs and any other safety concerns that may arise on campus.
