ENG 180

College Writing I. (3) Introduction to college writing, with an emphasis on the writing process, reflective writing, and critical thinking. All sections taught with word processors. Graded A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, U, F.

ENG 280

College Writing II. (3) A second course in college writing, to be taken during sophomore year. Emphasis on the interaction between writer and reader. Prerequisites: ENG 180 and at least 24 s.h. earned. Designated sections taught with word processors. Graded A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, U, F.

Introduction to Public Speaking. (3) Preparation and delivery of informative and persuasive speeches. Students apply concepts of critical listening, audience adaptation, organization/support of ideas, appropriate style, and effective delivery. Not open to students with credit for COMM 242.

Fundamentals of Public Speaking. (3) Preparation and delivery of informative and persuasive speeches. Students apply concepts of critical listening, audience adaptation, organization/support of ideas, appropriate style, and effective delivery completed in an online format. Not open to students with credit for COMM 241.

Biological Concepts. (4) A laboratory course recommended for nonscience majors, relating reproduction, heredity, evolution, ecology, and behavior to human life and the problems of society. This general education curriculum course does not count toward a major or minor in biology.

    BIOL 101

Biological World. (4) A laboratory course recommended for nonscience majors, dealing with the structure and function of the human body and with selected aspects of microbes, plants, and animals and how they affect humans. This general education course does not count toward a major or minor in biology.

Seminar in Elementary Education. (1) Provides students with an opportunity for early identification and professional involvement with their major. Examines characteristics of elementary educators and schools. Investigates specific areas of interest and expertise for elementary education majors and includes development of a personal philosophy of education. Required for all freshman, sophomores, and transfers. Graded S/U only.

ARTH 180

An Introduction to Art. (3) Designed to help students understand our cultural background and the role art plays in contemporary life. The functions, styles, structure of art, and the interaction of medium and meaning. Contact with art forms, visual aids, and readings are utilized to stimulate student responses to aesthetic qualities in the visual arts. Does not count for art majors.

World Regional Geography. (3) A survey of the world's regions emphasizing the spatial arrangements of resources, population, institutions, economic activities, and cultural landscapes, and their significance for distinctive regional problems.

American Government and Politics. (3) Development, organization, powers, limitation, and practical problems of the governmental and political system of the United States.

MUS 190

What to Listen for in Music. (3) An exploration of basic elements--rhythm, harmony, melody, texture, and form--with musical illustrations from various styles and media. Recommended for those without music background.

Classroom Observation/Seminar in Elementary Education (1) Observation of an elementary or middle level classroom with accompanying seminars focused on exploration of organization and delivery of classroom instruction. Graded S/U only.

Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers. (3) A first course in Mathematics for elementary school teachers examining the real number system from an algebraic perspective featuring problem solving, applications, and concrete representations.

EIS 202

Multicultural and Social Foundations of Education. (3) A study of the social, linguistic, and cultural factors that affect the educational experiences, practices, and environments in America. This course broadens students’ understanding of the diverse pluralistic nature of the contexts that either enhance or negate one’s educational experience. Field experience—10 hours required. A grade of C or above must be earned for teacher licensure.

Geometry for Elementary School Teachers. (3) A second course in Mathematics for elementary school teachers examining geometry and data analysis featuring problem solving and applications using concrete and pictorial representations.

LLA 313

Children's Literature (3) Survey of literature for children preschool through grade 6 with emphasis on critical analysis and evaluation of books in various genres. A minimum grade of C is required of teacher education majors.

IDT 285

Technology Integration Standards for Pre-Service Teachers. (3) Introduces pre-service teachers to fundamental concepts, skills, and attitudes for applying technology in educational settings, as defined by ISTE National Technology Standards for Teachers and ISBE Technology Standards for      All Illinois Teachers. Open only to students in the Teacher Education Program.

Elementary Education Field Work/Seminar II. (1) Clinical experience in an elementary or middle level classroom with accompanying seminars focused on exploration of individual characteristics of learners and professional standards for teachers. Transportation not furnished. Graded S/U only.

The Exceptional Learner (2) A survey of the characteristics of individuals with diverse mental, physical, behavioral, learning, or communication needs. This course emphasizes the identification and education of exceptional learners. For non-majors only.  A minimum grade of C is required of Teacher Education majors.

Teaching Our Heritage. (3) Develops the conceptual base for teaching the understanding of our heritage including the role of cultural diversity, change over time, place, government, production, and distribution. A minimum grade of C is required of teacher education majors.

KIN 360

Methods of Elementary Physical Education. (2) Introduction to teaching physical education in K-5. Designed especially for the elementary classroom teacher candidate. May include some field experiences and outside teaching assignments. Not open to Kinesiology majors.

SCED 364

Introductory Science Methods for Elementary Teachers. (3) Introduces the nature of science and science education by exploring various issues and approaches relevant to elementary science instruction. Emphasis is placed on contemporary programs which stress direct experience and activity- based learning. A minimum grade of C is required of teacher education majors.

EIS 301

Cognition, Development, and Motivation in Academic Settings. (3) An introduction to the state of knowledge in contemporary educational and developmental psychology as related to academic settings. Topics include cognitive processing, motivation, and physical, social, and emotional development. A grade of C or above must be achieved in EIS 301 for teacher licensure.

ELED 370

Field Work in Elementary Education. (1) Supervised practicum of educational experiences in elementary school programs. Students explore and apply learning theories as they tutor one or more elementary or middle grade students. Transportation not furnished. Graded S/U only.

(3) Introduction to developmentally appropriate methods for teaching and assessing reading, writing, speaking, and listening in early elementary classrooms, adapting these methods to meet the individual needs of diverse groups of children, and applying these methods in a classroom. Teaching Elementary School Mathematics. (4) An examination of pedagogical mathematics content in elementary school (Grades 1-6), the development of lesson plans and assessments implementing national and state standards, and integration of technology in the mathematics classroom.

EIS 305

(3) Develops the conceptual base for teaching the understanding of global connections including those dealing with social, environmental, economic, technological, and individual cultural dimensions. Field component required. A minimum grade of C is required of teacher education majors.

Integrating Science Through Inquiry. (3) Demonstrates how teachers can utilize the processes of inquiry to integrate the                various science disciplines--physical, life, earth, and environmental--to provide appropriate science learning experience in the elementary and middle level classroom. A minimum grade of C is required of teacher education majors.

ELED 371

Field Work in Elementary Education II. (1) Clinical experience in elementary/middle level classrooms. Students explore and apply learning theories and practices as they observe and participate in daily classroom instruction. Transportation not furnished. Graded S/U only.

Parent/Community Involvement. (3) Techniques for working with and involving families/communities, including conferencing skills, newsletters, home-visits, parent education, volunteers, meetings, and other ways to develop open communication and parental and community support. A minimum grade of C is required of teacher education students. Restricted: departmental permission.

SPED 390

Differentiating Instruction for Learners with Special Needs. (2) Introduces and provides practice in using various strategies, including         Universal Design for Learning, collaboration, Response to Intervention, and Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports, to help general educators serve learners with special needs in their classrooms. Not open to Special Education majors. A minimum grade of C is required of Teacher Education majors.

Teaching School Mathematics II-Elementary and Middle School. (3) An examination of the pedagogical mathematics content in elementary and middle        school, the development of lesson plans implementing national and state standards, and integration of technology in the mathematics classroom.

Introduction to Corrective Reading. (3) A course emphasizing group and individual identification and instructional procedures for corrective reading in the elementary school. A minimum grade of C is required of teacher education majors.

ELED 470

Senior Field Work/Seminar in Elementary Education. (4) Supervised practicum in elementary or middle level classroom with accompanying seminars. Preservice teachers work closely with mentor teachers in planning and implementing instruction, including curriculum integration of technology, guiding student learning, and evaluating student progress in the elementary school curriculum. Transportation not furnished. Graded S/U only.

EIS 401

Educational Law and Policy. (2) An analysis of formal legal and ethical problems that will allow students to critique contemporary debates in educational policy, law, and ethics. The course will examine the tension between competing philosophical theories and the construction and function of educational policy. A grade of C or above must be earned for teacher education.

Senior Seminar in Elementary Education. (1) Provides students with an opportunity for reflection, discussion, and professional reading related to their student teaching experience. Graded S/U only.

Elementary education candidates enroll in education courses beginning the first semester of the freshman year.
