Louis and Alice Schleier Memorial Financial Need Scholarship
HISTORY:
The Louis and Alice Schleier Memorial Teacher Education Scholarship for Academic Achievement was established in 1997 following the death of Mrs. Alice Muzzy Schleier. The scholarship is intended to recognize undergraduate students enrolled in teacher education programs at Western Illinois University. Dr. Louis M. Schleier, was the head of the education department and director of the graduate division until he passed away in his sleep on August 6, 1957. He had been suffering from a heart ailment. Dr. Schleier came to Western in 1931 as a professor in education and director of research. He was responsible for the publication of many excellent research reports prepared by himself and other faculty members. In 1956 he co-authored a textbook in the field of education.
Louis came to Western from the City College of New York where he was responsible for the teacher education program. He had been director of the training school at the State College of Education, Dillon, Montana. Other experience in teaching was gained at both the elementary and secondary levels. He received his bachelor's degree from the State College of Washington, the master's from the University of Washington, and the Ph.D from Teachers College, Columbia University in New York. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi, IEA, NEA, and other professional organizations as well as Kiwanis and other local civic groups.
CRITERIA:
- Demonstrated financial need
- Be enrolled in a teacher education program at Western.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Completed sophomore year at time scholarship is awarded
TERMS: Awards are $500 each. The number of awards are based on earnings in the fund – one half of earnings fund this award and one half for the Schleier Academic Scholarship
SELECTION PROCESS:
Selection will be made by the Office of Teacher Education Scholarship Committee. Award recipients will be notified by mail.
