Educator Preparation
School of Education Scholarships for Currently enrolled, freshmen, and transfers students
Ralph & Gladys Anderson Scholarship for African Americans (for currently enrolled & transfer students only)
- African American student.
- Curriculum & Instruction major pursuing the Elementary Education option at WIU.
- Completed 60 semester hours in the spring prior to fall award.
- Minimum cumulative GPA 3.0 (includes transfer GPA for new transfers).

- Curriculum & Instruction major pursuing the Elementary Education option at WIU.
- Completed 60 semester hours in the spring prior to fall award.
- Minimum cumulative GPA 3.0 (includes transfer GPA for new transfers).
Ralph & Gladys Anderson Scholarship for Mercer County High School Student (for currently enrolled & transfer students only)
- Graduate of Mercer County (Illinois) High School.
- Curriculum & Instruction major pursuing the Elementary Education option at WIU.
- Completed 60 semester hours by the conclusion of the spring semester prior to the fall award.
- Minimum cumulative GPA 3.0.
Ralph & Gladys Anderson Scholarship for Rock Island County High School Student (for currently enrolled & transfer students only)
- Curriculum & Instruction major pursuing the Elementary Education option at WIU.
- Completed 60 semester hours by the conclusion of the spring semester prior to the fall award.
- Minimum cumulative GPA 3.0 (includes transfer GPA for new transfers).
- First preference given to a graduate of Rock Island Illinois High School.
- Second preference given to a high school graduate from a county surrounding Rock Island High School.
Ralph & Gladys Anderson Scholarship for Sherrard Students (for currently enrolled & transfer students only)
- First preference to an African American student attending WIU with a 3.0 GPA or better with junior class status majoring in Special Education or Elementary Education who graduated from Sherrard High School,
- Second preference to any minority student attending WIU with junior class status majoring in Elementary Education or Special Education with a 3.0 GPA or better (includes transfer GPA for new transfers) who graduated from Sherrard High School.
- Third preference to any student attending WIU with junior class status majoring in Elementary Education or Special Education with a 3.0 GPA or better from Sherrard High School.
- Fourth preference to any student attending WIU with junior class status majoring in Elementary Education or Special Education with a 3.0 GPA or better from a county surrounding Sherrard High School.
Great River Teacher Corps (GRTC) program
- Minimum high school or college GPA of 3.0 - SAT/ACT scores not required but please submit if able
- Endorsement from a rural or small town school superintendent who agrees to interview the applicant
- Commit to teach in a rural or small town community for at least three years after receiving teaching license/certificate
- Current WIU Sophomores and Juniors must meet individual Teacher Education Program GPA requirements (transcript must be submitted at time of application)
- Recruits and develops highly talented teachers to work in schools in West Central Illinois
Anna Fagerlie Education Scholarship
- Undergraduate student, at any level
- Majoring in Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education or middle school education who are pursuing the literacy endorsement emphasis
- Minimum 3.0 GPA overall
- Priority given to middle level majors seeking the literacy area of specailization for endorsement.
- Highest grades received in WIU Reading and Literacy courses will be used as a deciding factor
John B. Beaver Scholarship (on hold currently enrolled & transfer students only)
- Junior status
- Majoring in Elementary Education or Early Childhood Education
- Minimum 3.5 GPA overall
- Minimum 3.75 GPA in the major
- Financial can be a consideration in awarding the scholarship.
- Evidence of involvement in education related professional activities such as tutoring, work with youth group~ membership and participation in education related professional organizations, and participation in education related workshops, especially leadership roles will be considered in awarding the scholarship.
- Additional consideration may be given to the student that has indicated an interest in or strong record in science. Courses taken in science and an interest in teaching elementary science, although not a major criterion should be considered in the final selection of the scholarship recipient
Helen L. Buckley Scholarship (up to $1,000; subject to change)
- freshman or sophomore WIU Elementary Education major
- minimum 3.60 G.P.A.
- rank in top 10% of graduating class
- preference will be given to applicants from Bureau County
Robert & Sandra Collier Early Childhood Education Scholarship ($1,000 be applied 1⁄2 fall and 1⁄2 spring; subject to change)
- Majoring in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction pursing the Early Childhood Education option
- Completed 60+ semester hours (must be earned by time of disbursement)
- Minimum grade point average of 3.0
- Financial need may be considered
Jessie Ferne Routh Grice Scholarship (up to $800; subject to change)
- plan to teach at elementary level
- if freshmen, be in upper 25% of class with minimum ACT of 25
- if transfer, minimum 3.00 G.P.A.
- be enrolled for minimum 12 semester hours
Wrenn R. and Evelyn J. Luman Grice Scholarship ($1,400; subject to change)
- Incoming high school graduate in the upper 25% of his/her class and have an ACT composite score of 25 or higher, or be currently enrolled having a GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Must be a resident of Fulton or Knox counties
- Must plan to teach at the elementary or secondary level
- Must provide two letters of recommendation, with at least one from a former teacher or current employer
- Must submit a high school transcript indicating class rank and total ACT (incoming Freshman), or current transcript (current student)
Carol J. Grice Major Scholarship (up to $600; subject to change)
- plan to teach at elementary level
- if freshmen, be in upper 25% of class with minimum ACT of 25
- if transfer, minimum 3.00 G.P.A.
- be enrolled for minimum 6 semester hours
Leanne L. Grice Porch Scholarship (up to $600; subject to change)
- plan to teach at elementary level
- if freshmen, be in upper 25% of class with minimum ACT of 25
- if transfer, minimum 2.50 G.P.A.
- be enrolled for minimum 12 semester hours
Mary L. Hinman Memorial Scholarship (3 awards at $1,000 each; currently enrolled & transfer students only; subject to change)
- Be a sophomore, junior or senior
- GPA of 3.0 or higher
- major in Elementary education
- Write an essay explaining why he/she wants to be a teacher and how the scholarship will help his/her education
- include three (3) letters of recommendation for the scholarship with application
Mary Luman Shortness Scholarship (up to $1,250; currently enrolled and transfer students only)
(subject to change)
- Majoring in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction pursing the Elementary Education option
- Completed 60 semester hours by the conclusion of the spring semester
- Minimum grade point average of 3.0
- Demonstrated financial need (the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) may be used to determine financial need)
- Letters of Reference from two faculty members
Thomas G. Oakson Memorial ($1,500; currently enrolled and transfer students only; subject to change)
- GPA: 2.75 overall and 3.0 major
- From Lake or Macon Counties in Illinois
- Be a sophomore, junior, or senior Elementary Education major
- Write an essay explaining why he/she wants to be a teacher and how the scholarship will help with his/her education
- Include three (3) letters of recommendation for the scholarship with application
- Renewable
