Education
Dr. Hammersley earned an M.A.and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. He completed a pre-doctoral internship in the Department of Psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine and postdoctoral training in neurocognitive & neuropsych assessment.
Teaching
Dr. Hammersley regularly teaches courses in substance use (e.g., PSY 334 Perspectives on Substance Use, PSY434 Substance Abuse Treatment Approaches and Techniques) as well as Psychopathology (PSY 424), Clinical Psychology (PSY 380), Psychology Field Experience/Community INternship (PSY 487), & graduate seminars on clinical psychological science (e.g. PSY 600). He also frequently supervises undergraduate or graduate independent studies.
Service
Recent service includes the department personnel, university online student evals, colloqium, graduate and ILLOWA conference planning, and experimental psychology graduate steering committees, as well as the Center for Innovation in Teaching & Research Advisory Board, University Graduate Council, and the Midwestern regional Psi Chi Steering committee and the MPA Program committee.

Much of his clinical work and research has involved neuropsychology/neurocognitive assessment, addictive behaviors, or mood and affect (e.g. emotional distractability and attentional mechanisms that may lead to or maintain psychopathology or drug use). He is particularly interested in studying substance use, including smoking, in relation to psychological disorders (i.e., ADHD) and mental health symptoms (i.e., depression or anxiety).
